1. Q. What new features are included in Microsoft Project version 3.0
for Windows?
A. One of the new features of Microsoft Project version 3.0 is a
customizable toolbar in which some of the most frequently used
commands, such as printing and previewing, are just one mouse
click away. With the new macro language in Microsoft Project
version 3.0, you can define your own buttons and assign them to
commands or to macros.
Microsoft Project version 3.0 also brings you PlanningWizards
that can guide you from starting a project to setting
preferences and leveling resources. You can now have up to
9,999 tasks and an equal number of resources per file. The
multiple-page print preview allows you to view up to 32 pages
together on the screen, and fit-to-page printing is now
available for users with PostScript(R) printers. In addition,
you can have up to 10 levels in an outline, which means you can
be twice as detailed when you construct your project. Other new
utilities include a spelling checker as well as a graph module
that you can use to create custom graphs from project
information.
Microsoft Project version 3.0 now supports dynamic data
exchange (DDE), which enables both cross-project task linking
and information sharing with other applications, such as
Microsoft Excel for Windows. Microsoft Project version 3.0 also
supports object linking and embedding (OLE). This feature
allows you to update a Microsoft Project version 3.0 Gantt
chart that is embedded in a Microsoft Word for Windows document
simply by double-clicking the chart object.
2. Q. I understand that there is a maintenance release of Microsoft
Project version 3.0 for Windows. What are the specific issues
that this maintenance release resolves?
A. The Microsoft Project version 3.0a maintenance release corrects
problems that occur when you are:
- Saving files that share a common resource pool
- Using the Rollup option in the Gantt chart view
- Linking data in the Percent Complete field with the Paste
Link command
- Calculating the number of weeks in a year
If you are using Microsoft Project version 3.0 and you save
files that share a common resource pool, you may receive a
general protection (GP) fault or an unrecoverable application
error (UAE) (depending on the file sizes and the number of
times you save them). While these errors do not normally result
in a loss of data, we suggest that you obtain the maintenance
release that corrects these problems.
When you are using the Rollup option in the Gantt Chart view,
if more than one bar or symbol is rolled up for any single
task, you may receive a GP fault or a UAE when you close print
preview or when you print your document. This problem is
corrected in Microsoft Project version 3.0a.
In Microsoft Project version 3.0, when you link a value from
another application by choosing the Paste Link command to paste
the value in the Percent Complete field, the link is not
established. With Microsoft Project version 3.0a, you can paste
and link successfully.
In Microsoft Project version 3.0, when you calculate the number
of weeks in a year, the numbering begins with the week that
January 1 occurs in, even if January 1 is the last day of the
week. In Microsoft Project version 3.0a, the first week of the
year is redefined as the first week that includes more than 4
days of the new year.
To obtain Microsoft Project version 3.0a for Windows, call
Microsoft Consumer Sales at (800) 426-9400.
3. Q. What are the minimum hardware and software requirements for
Microsoft Project version 3.0 for Windows?
A. To run Microsoft Project version 3.0, you need the following:
- An IBM(R)PC/AT(R) or compatible, or PS/2(R), with an 80286
or higher processor.
- 2 megabytes (MB) of RAM is the minimum requirement; 3 MB is
strongly recommended.
- A hard disk with 8.1 MB of available hard disk space.
- MS-DOS or PC-DOS versions 3.1 or later.
- Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.0 or later
running in standard or 386 enhanced mode.
- An IBM-compatible EGA, VGA, 8514/A, or Hercules(R) graphics
card or other high-resolution graphics card compatible with
Windows version 3.0 or later.
- A mouse is optional but highly recommended because some
Microsoft Project version 3.0 features require a mouse.
- A 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch high-density disk drive or a 3.5-
inch low-density disk drive.
Microsoft Project version 3.0 ships on 5.25-inch, high-density (1.2
MB) disks and 3.5-inch, high-density (1.44 MB) disks. A 3.5-inch, low-
density (720K) disk set is available through a coupon in the Microsoft
Project version 3.0 package or through Microsoft Consumer Sales at
(800) 426-9400.
